Council approves location for new emergency call centre

Dec 17, 2024 | 6:00 AM

City Council approved having a new Integrated Emergency Contact Centre in the City on 99 building at its meeting on Monday.

It would answer calls for 911, police, fire, Municipal Enforcement Services and Mobile Outreach.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says the chiefs for the Grande Prairie Fire Department and Grande Prairie Police Service think this will lead to a more efficient set-up.

“Not just because of the new police service, but really for a streamlining of services.”

“With the Grande Prairie Police Service (coming along), it provided us with an opportunity to transition to a different format and, with that integrated approach, providing a better service overall.”

There is $1.2 million set aside in the city budget to establish this centre.

Clayton says grant money form the province could help pay for the this.

“There was a grant that was provided by the provincial government that this project fits under, so we’re optimistic that we’ll receive so provincial funding for that.”

The grant form the province’s Local Growth and Sustainability Grant program that could cover half of that cost, if it is approved.

The new facility would replace the current dispatch centre located in the fire hall located along Resources Road.

The new one would be located in City on 99 downtown.

Clayton says any possible location would need a lot of upgrades.

“There’s significant data requirements and, really, through that integration of services, you can imagine the sophistication and the amount of IT that would be in a facility like that.”

“It will take some time to build it out, but it also had some significant requirements.”

The city had listed City on 99, the former public library located at 99 Avenue and 99 Street, for sale for a five month period that started in early June.
