County of GP Reeve looking back on 2024

The Reeve for the County of Grande Prairie is calling 2024 a dynamic year.

The County saw several projects conducted over the last 12 months.

Reeve Bob Marshall says a significant project was the electoral boundary review following the dissolution of Hythe.

“One of the things we looked at is population, so we did a census this year,” says Marshall. “And we found out we’re just under 27,000 I believe it’s 26,701 is what our municipal census showed. So, up from the previous one. It’s showing the County is definitely growing.”

Marshall also signaled out the Dunes West Wildfire and the work they County had taken to help mitigate it.

“We did have helicopters we were renting at the time once we hit those high peak seasons,” he says. “We were somewhat fortunate with the weather on [May 11], it was quite smoky and kind of restricted the fire’s growth. We were able to get ahead of things and get [prescribed] burns and fire guards built around that, and containment.

He says in 2025 he is looking forward to the start of construction on the new Mountview Health Complex in Beaverlodge and the Wonder Valley Data Centre in Greenview.

“It’s going to draw the world’s attention to our area,” he says. “The potential is huge. The growth that comes with it will be a challenge, but you know what? That is a good challenge to have. We just have to manage that well and do the best to minimize the negative impacts that can potentially come with it.”

Earlier this month the MD of Greenview formally announced their partnership with O’Leary Ventures to build the Data Centre in the Greenview Industrial Gateway, the largest in the world.
