Local hockey teams wrap up 2024 portion of seasons

Ice action for local hockey teams will be halted for nearly two weeks for Christmas and New Year’s break.

GP Storm

The AJHL’s Grande Prairie Storm went on a three game road trip for their last games of 2024.

They kicked off in Calgary Friday, losing 3-1 to the Canucks.

The Storm went to Canmore on Saturday and lost to the Eagles 4-1. The boys then headed back to Calgary and lost 8-1.

Grande Prairie’s next game is January 3 in Lloydminster.

NWJHL

Seven games were played over the weekend in the Strike Group North West Junior Hockey League before the holiday break commenced.

On Friday:

  • The Sexsmith Vipers were shutout by the Beaverlodge Blades 7-0.
  • The Fairview Flyers hosted the North Peace Navigators and lost 5-3.

On Saturday:

  • Dawson Creek travelled to the County of Grande Prairie and won 4-2.
  • Beaverlodge blewout the Flyers 10-2.
  • The Navs won 5-2 at home to Fort St. John.
  • La Crete beat Sexsmith 10-1 on the road.

The lone game Sunday had La Crete beating Dawson Creek 5-3 before heading back home.

NPHL

The North Peace Hockey League wrapped up 2024 play with seven games over the weekend.

On Thursday, two games went into overtime. The Spirit River Rangers hosted Dawson Creek, and beat the Canucks 2-1 and the Fox Creek Knights won at home over the Falher Pirates 6-5.

On Friday, The Valleyview Jets beat the Grande Prairie Athletics 5-4, and the Manning Comets won 7-4 at home over the High Prairie Regals.

On Saturday:

  • Fox Creek lost to High Prairie 6-5.
  • Dawson Creek beat Grande Prairie 5-3.
  • Spirit River won in OT 5-4 over Falher.
