Grande Prairie RCMP and Grande Prairie Police Service reports transition progressing smoothly

Dec 31, 2024 | 10:48 AM

Another step has been made in Grande Prairie’s transition to having a municipal police service.

Five more members of the Grande Prairie Police Service have joined the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment as of the end of 2024, with four serving as general duty police officer, and one as a forensic investigator.

Acting Detachment Commander Mark MacDougald says the detachment and the GPPS will work together to deliver high-quality policing and ensure the transition moves forward thoughtfully and carefully.

GPPS Chief Dwayne Lakusta says the smooth integration of GPPS members into the RCMP detachment is a testament to public safety being non-negotiable during the transition.

As part of their training and assessment completed during the recruitment process, the GPPS officer are also being trained in RCMP policies and procedures to provide citizens with a consistent approach to policing.

More experienced officers and 12 recruits are expected to join the detachment after graduation in March 2025; the Alberta RCMP remains the police of the Grande prairie jurisdiction during the transition.
