Local hockey weekend recap

The Peace Region’s hockey teams fired back up again over the first weekend of January following a holiday break at the end of 2024.

Grande Prairie Storm

The AJHL’s Grande Prairie Storm is on the road for three games.

The first visited Lloydminster on Friday, where they fell 5-4 to the Bobcats in a shootout.

On Saturday, the boys travelled north to Fort McMurray for a doubleheader. They lost the first game 4-3, but came back on Sunday to win 6-3 before heading back home.

The Storm sit second in the North Division, six points back of the Whitecourt Wolverines.

Grande Prairie will be home this coming weekend hosting the Devon Xtreme on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Strike Group NWJHL

The Strike Group North West Junior Hockey League also kicked of their first weekend of 2025 with eight games.

On Friday:

  • The Fairview Flyers won over the Dawson Creek Kodiaks 5-4.
  • The North Peace Navigators hosted the Fort St John Huskies and lost 7-5.

On Saturday:

  • The Flyers went to Beaverlodge and lost 6-2.
  • The Huskies headed to the County of Grande Prairie and won 6-3 over the Wheat Kings.
  • Sexsmith Vipers lost to the La Crete Lumber Barons 7-5 on the road.

On Sunday:

  • Beaverlodge beat the Wheat Kings 7-4.
  • The Navs lost to the Kodiaks 3-1.
  • The Lumber Barons shut out the Vipers 9-0.

The next games are on Wednesday January 8; the Navs host Beaverlodge and the Flyers are at Dawson Creek. Both games start at 8:00 p.m.

NPHL

The North Peace Hockey League senior men resumed with six games to start 2025.

On Friday:

  • The Grande Prairie Athletics lost on the road 6-4 to the Spirit River Rangers.
  • The Fox Creek Knights won over the Valleyview Jets 6-5.
  • The Manning Comets blew the High Prairie Regals out of the water 9-1.

On Saturday:

  • The Regals tried to bounce back, but lost 8-6 to the Fort St John Flyers.
  • Manning lost to Spirit River 3-1.
  • The Jets couldn’t get a win this weekend a lost 8-3 to the Dawson Creek Canucks.

The next games in the league are on Thursday, January 9, with Fox Creek at Dawson Creek, Fort St. John at Grande Prairie, and High Prairie hosts Valleyview. All games start at 8:30 p.m. local time.
