Province announces funding increases for NADB program

Jan 7, 2025 | 12:37 PM

The Alberta government is doubling down on its investment in Northern Alberta’s workforces by making 2025 the second straight year of major funding increases to the Northern Alberta Development Bursary program.

This latest increase brings the total funding boosts to nearly $1.1 million and allows for an additional 50 students to receive support for their post-secondary costs.

Through NADB, students can receive up to $11,500 per year to cover post-secondary education expenses.

The program has multiple categories; with this year’s funding increase focused on the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit (FNMI) bursary, as well as for students applying for the Northern Alberta Development Council (NADC) bursary.

The FNMI bursary accepts applications between February 1 to June 1, and from June 15 to November 15 annually. The NADC bursary accepts applications from January 2 to April 30 annually to assists students in a two-year program or finishing the last two years of post-secondary studies.

In its 50 years of existence, the program has assisted more than 7,100 students and kept the northern workforce strong and competitive.

Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade Matt Jones says the province’s investment is about building a stronger, more sustainable future of Northern Alberta.

Since April 2024, NADB has had 1,165 students apply for help, reflecting a 43 per cent increase in applications when compared to 813 received in 2023-24.
