Local hockey weekend recap: Jan 9-12

Three local leagues hit the ice this past weekend in the Peace Country.

Strike Group NWJHL

The North West Junior Hockey League saw seven games over the weekend.

On Friday,

  • The Sexsmith Vipers beat the Fairview Flyers on the road 5-2.
  • The Fort St. John Huskies won 6-1 at home over the Dawson Creek Kodiaks.

On Saturday:

  • The La Crete Lumber Barons travelled to the County of Grande Prairie and beat the Wheat Kings 5-4.
  • The Flyers lost to the North Peace Navigators 7-1.
  • The Beaverlodge Blades won 5-4 over Sexsmith.

On Sunday:

  • La Crete had a rare loss to Fort St. John 7-4.
  • The Vipers bounced back for a 6-4 win over the Navs on home ice.

The league resumes for a single game on Wednesday January 15 in the County of Grande Prairie where the Wheat Kings will host the Kodiaks. Puck drop is 8:00 p.m. at the Crosslink County Sportsplex.

Senior Men’s NPHL

The North Peace Hockey League featured eight games on their weekend schedule.

On Thursday:

  • The Fox Creek Knights lost 14-2 to the Dawson Creek Canucks.
  • The Grande Prairie Athletics hosted the Fort St. John Flyers, and won 6-5.
  • The Valleyview Jets prevailed 12-4 over the High Prairie Regals.

There was only one game on Friday, where the Manning Comets shutout the Knights 4-0.

On Saturday:

  • The Canucks and Spirit River Rangers went into overtime, with Dawson Creek winning 6-5.
  • Fort St. John lost to Valleyview 6-1.
  • The Athletics kept up their winning ways with a 7-3 victory over High Prairie.
  • Manning got another win; 4-2 over the Falher Pirates.

The next games are slated for Thursday; Dawson Creek hosts Fort St. John and Spirit River at Grande Prairie. Both games start at 8:30 p.m. local time.

AJHL Grande Prairie Storm

The Storm had the weekend off. They next play the Devon Xtreme on January 17 and 18 at Bonnett’s Energy Centre.

The boys sit second in the North Division, and fifth in the entire league.
