Hockey, curling, cross-country skiing, Wolves, HoopFest, ski hills this weekend

NWJHL

In the Northwest Junior Hockey League Friday, Sexsmith in Beaverlodge, Peace River in Dawson Creek and Fairview in Fort St. John.

On Saturday, Dawson Creek will be in Fairview.

Those games will start at 8 p.m.

Also Saturday, Wheat Kings in La Crete will start at 7 p.m.

Sunday, Wheat Kings in La Crete starts at 1:30. Fort St. John in Peace River will start at 2 p.m.

NPHL

There are four games in the North Peace Hockey League Saturday, Grande Prairie in Spirit River, Falher in Dawson Creek, Fort St. John in Manning, and High Prairie in Fox Creek.

Those games will start at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, Falher in Manning will start at 3:30 p.m.

There were games on Thursday night as well.

Dawson Creek won 8-2 in Grande Prairie, Spirit River beat visiting Falher 8-5 and Valleyview won 12-5 at home over High Prairie.

Curling

The Grande Prairie Curling Centre is hosting a Senior Championship qualifier Saturday and Sunday.

Tracy Steinke of Dawson Creek plays Tony Germsheid of Sherwood Park in the first game at 9 a.m.

Germsheid then plays Kurt Balderston at 2 p.m, then Balderston and Steinke meet at 7 p.m.

The play-off games are set for 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday

The Sexsmith Curling Club is hosting its Farmer’s Bonspiel in honour of Allen Schudlo this weekend. Forty teams are taking part.

Cross Country Skiing

The Wapiti Nordic Ski Club is hosting the fifth and sixth races in the 2025 Alberta Cup cross-country ski racing series this weekend.

There will be 200 athletes from U8 to Masters age groups will take part.

Racing will go from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. Spectators are welcome.

The series will conclude in Red Deer February 15 and 16.

Wolves

The Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves volleyball teams are back home this weekend.

They host Concordia University of Edmonton Friday at 6 and 8 p.m. and Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.

Both days start with the women’s game.

Basketball visits Concordia the same days and times.

HoopFest

Local basketball fans are in luck this weekend, as HoopFest takes over Grande Prairie Friday and Saturday,

Over 60 teams will take part in the tournament spread out between the Comp., I.V. Macklin, St. Joe’s and Charles Spencer.

There are 40 teams in the Grade 7-8 division and 22 in the Grade 9 division, a total of 90 games will be played over two days, with non-stop action on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at both Charles Spencer and the Comp.

HoopFest will also serve as a fundraiser for both senior basketball teams at Charles Spencer and the Comp. – Tanner Smith.

Ski Hills

Nitehawk is open Friday from 5:30 to 9:30, 11-5 Saturday and Sunday. The Tube Zone will be open from 5-7 and 7:30-9:30 Friday, noon-2 and 2:30 to 4:30 Saturday and Sunday.

Whispering Pines Ski Hill is open Saturday and Sunday from 10-4 p.m. The rental shop opens at 9 a.m.

Fairview Ski Hill is open from 11-5 Saturday and Sunday.

Spring Lake Ski Hill is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Little Smoky Ski Area is open Saturday and Sunday.

Misery Mountain is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Powder King is open from 9-3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
