No injuries in abandoned Avondale home fire

Jan 29, 2025 | 9:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Fire Department says a fire broke out in an abandoned house on Tuesday morning near downtown. A vacant two-story home in the Avondale neighbourhood was found with flames coming from through the main floor window at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The fire department says reports indicated potential trespassers in the house, which prompted a search and confirmed nobody was inside at the time of the blaze. The fire department is glad to report there were no injuries during this fire.

Crews began on suppressing the fire, and flames spread to the upper levels of the home including the attic, and firefighters had to be removed from the inside of structure for safety.

The fire was then controlled from the outside, but firefighters struggled with multiple void spaces within the home, hampering their efforts.

A decision to demolish the structure was made due to many factors including; unsafe conditions, risks to the community, adjoining properties, as well as environmental damages from water runoff.

At this time, there has been no cause of fire given by officials.
