New round of residential snow clearing to start in Grande Prairie Wednesday

Feb 26, 2025 | 6:01 AM

A new round of residential snow plowing is expected to start today (Wednesday, February 26) after council voted in favour of doing this at Monday’s meeting.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says council has been hearing from residents about conditions during what she calls “a unique winter with a lot of freeze and thaw.”

“We are hearing from residential subdivisions and residents of our community, saying it’s really hard to get through (residential areas with) the freeze and thaw. Some have soft snow; some have frozen snow.”

“There are mobility issues, which leads to, potentially, safety issues.”

Clayton says the city also wants to address drainage and flooding issues.

“As snow gathers over storm drains and there’s a freeze and thaw, storm drains freeze up.”

“We have crews that go around and help mitigate that, but removing snow will be the best way for us to able to mitigate future concerns with flooding and freezing.”

Snow removal will follow the usual Week A-Week B rotation, where streets are cleared the day before garbage day.

No parking signs will be in place.

Clayton says the city wants to take advantage of this warm weather to clear the roads.

“It’s not about necessarily removing all the windrows or all the cul de sac piles, but it’s about getting the snow off the roads while we’re in this sort of warm-up period.”

“It’s easy to do it, so we’ll do it now, then, hopefully, we’ll be into spring.”

The city has set a rule that snow removal is to start when accumulations reach 13 centimetres. City staff told council that we’re below that standard.

More information on snow removal can be found on the city’s website.
