The City of Grande Prairie has been presented with an award in recognition of its role hosting the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in 2024.

The city was awarded the Sport Tourism Canada Canadian Sport Event of the Year Award – Group B, at the Prestige Sport Tourism Awards Thursday.

The awards recognize the overall success of an outstanding sport event held in Canada.

The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships held in May of last year brought in 350 players and nearly 6,000 people to Grande Prairie for 46 games. The city provided free admission to all games and supplementary events.

“The City of Grande Prairie is immensely proud of this achievement, and for everyone in our organization and the community from the organizers to the volunteers and sponsors who made it all possible. We have a legacy as a games city, and the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships are helping us carry that torch on,”

– Jackie Clayton, Mayor of the City of Grande Prairie

The city is thanking the Indigenous Sport Council for its support and the Aboriginal Sport Council for selecting Grande Prairie to host the championships.
