Moderate wildfire risk in Grande Prairie, Whitecourt Forest Areas

Apr 16, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Fire watchers say the wildfire hazard is climbing.

It is listed as moderate for the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Officials say the fire danger will increase as the snow melts and dead grass and vegetation start to show.

There has been one small fire since January 1.

Hazard reduction burning is expected to continue in Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation throughout April. Just over 26 hectares have been burned so far.

The fire hazard in the Whitecourt Forest Area is also listed as moderate. People are asked to be careful as windy conditions are expected in the coming days.

It has had three fires since the start of January that have burned just over 1.6 hectares.

Most of that was in an under control fire located just south of Blue Ridge and east of Highway 658. This fire started on April 13.
