Possible measles exposure at Peace River Community Health Centre

Apr 22, 2025 | 12:08 PM

Alberta Health Services says there has been more confirmed cases of the measles within the North Zone.

One of the confirmed cases were in a public setting, at the Peace River Community Health Centre. The time frame of the possible exposure to others was between April 15 at 9:20 p.m. to April 16 at 1:00 a.m.

Anyone who was in this specific location during this time frame, and was born in or after 1970 and has less than two documented doses of the measles-containing vaccine is at risk for developing measles.

People are asking to self-monitor themselves for symptoms of measles and are strongly encouraged to review their immunization records.

Symptoms of measles include:

  • Fever of 38.3° C or higher; and
  • Cough, runny nose and/or red eyes; and
  • A rash that appears 3 to 7 days after fever starts, usually beginning behind the ears and on the face and spreading down to the body and then to the arms and legs. The rash appears red and blotchy on lighter skin colours. On darker skin colours, it can appear purple or darker than the skin around it, or it might be hard to see.

Complications of measles can include ear infections, pneumonia, inflammation of the brain, premature delivery, and rarely death. People who are pregnant, less than 1 year of age, or have weakened immune systems are at greatest risk.

If you find yourself developing symptoms of measles, please contact HealthLink at 811 before visiting any healthcare facility or provider, including family doctors or pharmacy.

Measles vaccines are free in Alberta, and are highly effective at preventing infection and complications. AHS says the recommended schedule for measles vaccination is two doses, the first at one year of age and the second at 18 months.
