Special Weather Statement

Conditions favourable for more tornadoes in northern Alberta

Jun 16, 2026 | 1:00 PM

A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada as conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds today (Tuesday, June 16) in Alberta.

The warning stretches from the northwest corner of the province, spanning southeast towards Lloydminster and into Saskatchewan.

The statement includes the Peace Region, north of the Peace River and north of Lesser Slave Lake.

The national weather office says these type of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms and are not normally not a danger near the ground.

However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued.

A “rare” tornado tore through the Village of Girouxville and surrounding communities on Monday (June 15) evening.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada for the most up to date information.
