Six confirmed tornadoes in Peace Region on June 15

An unlikely weather system blew through the Peace Region on the evening of Monday, June 15, 2026, leaving a path of destruction for one community.

The Northern Tornadoes Project, founded by Western University in 2017, tracks tornado occurrences in Canada to “improve severe and extreme weather understanding and prediction, mitigate against harm to people and property, and investigate future implications due to climate change.”

According to data from NTP, six tornadoes touched down across the Peace Country in three different supercell thunderstorms. Four tornadoes occurred in one long-track supercell.

No injuries have been reported.

Four of the six tornadoes have been rated as EF0, the lowest possible rating. They were located northwest of Hines Creek at 5 p.m., east of Nampa near Harmon Valley at 8:30 p.m., south of Falher at 8:30 p.m., and south of McLennan at 8:55 p.m. Maximum wind speeds reached 115km/h with minimal tree damage.

An EF1 tornado started southeast of Enilda at 9:42 p.m. and tracked north toward the Sucker Creek First Nation area. Estimated maximum wind speeds from this storm were 150 km/h. Trees, a fence and a recreational trailer were damaged. The storm tracked 7.6 km and was 200 meters wide.

The strongest of the six tornadoes of the evening tore through the Village of Girouxville just after 8 p.m. It has been classified as an EF2. The storm developed west of Girouxville and tracked 11.1 km. Homes and small buildings were damaged, as well as nearby farms. It is estimated wind speeds of up to 190km/h were reached in a 600-metre-wide path.

Alberta Storm Watch says the EF2 that went through Girouxville is the strongest tornado the Peace Region has experienced since 2003 in Grimshaw.

So far, Alberta has seen 19 tornadoes touch down in 2026.
