Edmonton exempts wrestling from combative sports ban

Jan 23, 2018 | 3:15 PM

Edmonton City Council has moved to exempt wrestling from a year-long ban on combative sports events in the city.

Council voted unanimously this morning in favour of an amendment to the bylaw banning the city from issuing new licenses or event permits for combative sports through the end of this year.

The W.W.E. said it was postponing a planned February bout in Edmonton after the moratorium was put in place last month.

The ban was imposed after council received an update on an independent review into the death of professional boxer Tim Hague, who died after a sanctioned boxing match in Edmonton last June.
