Challenger Brian Ortega broken nose, thumb in loss to Max Holloway at UFC 231

Dec 10, 2018 | 8:22 AM

TORONTO — Featherweight Brian Ortega, battered for four rounds by champion Max (Blessed) Holloway at UFC 231 on Saturday night, says he sustained a broken nose and thumb in the loss.

Holloway (20-3-0) won his 13th straight when the doctor put a halt to the beating.

“Doctor stopped it and I agree,” Ortega wrote in a social media post. “Broken nose and a broken thumb. I was willing to die in there.

“(Saturday) night was Max’s night. I’ll be back. Thank you to everyone who’s always believed in me and supported me.”

According to FightMetric, Holloway connected on 290 of 490 significant strikes — a UFC single-fight record. The two fighters combined for 400 significant strikes landed (Ortega connected on 110 of 292 attempts), erasing the UFC single-fight record of 334 set by Nate Diaz and Donald (Cowboy) Cerrone in a 2011 three-round bout.

The loss was the first for the Californian, whose record slipped to 14-1-0 with one no contest.
