Local airport traffic on track for record-breaking year

Dec 10, 2018 | 7:10 AM

The Chief Executive Officer at the Grande Prairie Airport says passenger movements this year are on a record pace.

So far in 2018, there have been 377,000 passengers in an out of the airport, that’s a nine per cent increase this year compared to 2017 and CEO Brian Grant credits the increase to an improved economy.

“If we stay on track, it looks like we’ll be touching close to our all-time record in 2015, so we are looking forward to closing out a strong year,” said Grant.

The record set in 2015 is 435,000 passengers.

“I think in general the whole economy in the area feels a bit better.  It certainly feels like more people are moving around and travelling.  We notice it here with the amount of parking that takes place and it has steadily increased since mid-summer.  So, certainly, it is a sign of things improving somewhat in this region compared to the rest of the province.”

Grant says a lot of people are going to Eastern Canada. Leisure travel is also busier these days.
