Power plays hero for Storm Saturday against Bobcats

Another big crowd at Revolution Place saw the Grande Prairie Storm earn a 5-3 victory over the Lloydminster Bobcats Saturday night.

The game got off to a wild start as the two clubs combined for four goals in the first 3:18 of the first period and quickly the game was tied at two. Cruz Cote and Sean Thomson found the back of the net in the first for Grande Prairie.

Following the four quick strikes, the teams would settle down, and the next goal wouldn’t occur until late in the middle stanza.

A bouncing puck in the slot area following a Grande Prairie rush would hop onto the stick of Zachary Okabe who would make no mistake and lift the Storm to a 3-2 advantage. The goal was Okabe’s 16th of the campaign.

Lloydminster would even up the game at the tail end of the 2nd period on a 4 on 3 power play as Daniel Hilsendagar would score 6th of the year to make it 3-3.

The two teams would remain tied midway through the third period, going back and forth with chances, However, it was a familiar face playing hero for the Storm.

Connor Blake would win an offensive face-off directly back to Jared Power who would wire one right off the draw into the back of the net to give the Storm the 4-3 advantage.

Justin Bernier would add an empty net goal, and the Storm would walk away with their 21st win of the season.

With the win and a Sherwood Park loss, the Storm have vaulted back into 4th place in the AJHL North division.

Grande Prairie will be back on the ice Tuesday on the road in Drayton Valley.
