Second security line to be installed at Grande Prairie Airport

Apr 27, 2018 | 1:58 PM

Equipment to accommodate a second security line at the Grande Prairie Airport (GPA) will be installed by the beginning of summer.

After making temporary renovations to ease long wait times during busy periods in March, the Grande Prairie Airport Commission has announced that an agreement was made on Tuesday with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA).

Renovations and project management will be paid for by the GPA, according to the media release. It also says the line is meant to be used during “peak periods”.

“The renovations are going to include an expanded area where an x-ray system will be housed with a little more queuing and line space inside the room. The majority of the renovations is to accept the new line and equipment,” said CEO Brian Grant.

He says the construction will start in the next few weeks with the opening of the second line set for mid to the end of June.

“We are hoping to do most of this with no impact on passengers for movement and flow. We are staging it so the renovations won’t impact the operations at the peak periods too much. I don’t think people will need more time to board than what they do now.”

CATSA is currently working on hiring people to fill the requirements for the second portion.
