Take Back the Night March and event planned for Friday

Nov 28, 2018 | 3:31 PM

The Grande Prairie Prevention of Family Violence Network is inviting the community to take part in Friday’s Take Back the Night March.

Natasha Streeter, Chair of the Prevention of Family Violence Network in Grande Prairie, says they are asking community members and professionals alike to take the opportunity to show support in ending domestic and gender-based violence.

“So, we will be having speeches and food, making signs, and we will be doing a march through the downtown core to raise awareness around people who are impacted by family violence,” she said.

Last year, they had 65 people show up for the first time hosting the event, which Streeter says was a turnout they were very happy with.

The march wraps up Family Violence Prevention Month. Throughout November, community members have been asked to ‘go purple’ and you may have noticed purple ribbons in neighbourhoods, downtown, on people’s coats and even the Storm players are wearing them on their helmets.

“All of this purple is a sign and a symbol that community members believe that together we can work together to prevent family violence and we can create safer communities for men, women, and children who experience family violence.”

Streeter says family violence rates increase over the holiday season.

“Just given the intensive amounts of stress and expectations that often occur, we know that people are often triggered, and coping mechanisms can sometimes be low, and it can be very difficult for people to sort through the things that they are experiencing.”

Friday’s event is for anyone who wants to come out and show their support, or anybody that wants to learn more about family violence initiatives in Grande Prairie.

Starting at 5 p.m. at City on 99th, there will be food, hot beverages, and sign-making. The march starts at 6 p.m.
