North Peace Navigators President provides update on Darcy Haugan Memorial

The President of the North Peace Navigators has provided an update on the progress of the Darcy Haugan memorial in Peace River.

Albert Cooper explains the project is still in its fund-collecting phase, and it’s currently sitting at close to $72,000 of it’s approximately $85,000 goal.

He says the funding has come from a variety of sources.

“Well, there has been some (funding) from municipalities. It’s been at this point, largely from businesses and individual families who thought highly of Darcy and would like to see this statue made in memory of him,” says Cooper.

Once funding is collected, the statue will be created by a world-famous artist based out of Cochrane, Don Begg. Some of Begg’s work includes pieces he has worked on for the Calgary Stampede, and the Fallen Four Memorial in Mayerthorpe.

Cooper notes there is no definitive timeline for the project, but he hopes it will be complete and mounted in front of the new arena in Peace River in about a year.

Anyone who would like to donate towards the project can do so by reaching out to the organization on its website.

“People were very supportive of Darcy. He gave an awful lot to the community,” says Cooper. “He was raised here, played all his minor hockey here, he cut his teeth as head coach of the North Peace Navigators for about 12 years. People know him well and he contributed a lot back to the community. He’s certainly a young man who we think is worth honouring. The values he had, what he stood for, all of those things were very positive for our community.”
