City hosts Board Governance workshop

The City of Grande Prairie is hosting a workshop called “Introduction to Board Governance: Understanding Your Roles and Responsibilities” on April 13 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is a learning opportunity is aimed towards local non-profits and came about from a partnership with the Alberta Culture and Tourism Board Development Program.

The workshop which is set to take place at the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion in Muskoseepi Park, is being facilitated by Culture and Tourism Alberta which is also providing the curriculum.

“The day is going to be full. It’s a great curriculum that covers all sorts of topics from the legal landscape and responsibilities, general roles and responsibilities of board members. It also covers organizational planning and financial responsibilities,” says Patricia Millward with the City’s Community Recreation Development department.

The workshop is designed to provide information to those who want to learn more about their role, enhance skills and understand how to work more effectively.

“We have a lot of non-profits that operate in Grande Prairie and they’re volunteers, and you know people come with their passion for the interest in the board that they’re getting involved in but not everyone has board experience. Understanding your roles and responsibilities and Board Governance is really important to having a successful organization,” said Millward.

Topics covered in the workshop include “Liability and risk management and the link to policy development”, “Understanding one’s legal landscape and legal responsibilities”, “Building a strong team and effective relationships” and “Effective meetings and making the most of committees” to name a few.

“This workshop is designed for new board members who want to learn more about what that role means and their roles and responsibilities but also to board members who do have existing experience and you know want to enhance their skills and learn more about the scope of what they’re doing.”
