Two convicted of manslaughter in death of live-in landlord

CALGARY – A Calgary judge has sentenced two men convicted of manslaughter in the death of their live-in landlord to four years each in prison.

Brian Lambert and James Beaver were found guilty last month for their roles in the fatal beating of 33-year-old Sutton Bowers.

Bowers was found dead in October 2016 inside the townhome he and the two men shared in the southeast Calgary neighbourhood of Acadia.

Court heard that a heated argument the three had over the accommodation turned into a physical fight in which Bowers was punched, choked and slammed into the floor.

Lambert, 44, and Beaver, 54, moved him to the bottom of the stairs and worked to clean up the blood before leaving their landlord for dead.

Justice K.D. Yamauchi said it appears as if the pair did not intend to kill Bowers, but their actions were “cruel, self-serving and socially abhorrent.”
