Gay-Straight Alliances

Province-wide protest being planned by Calgary students

Apr 22, 2019 | 12:57 PM

A group of Calgary students are planning a province-wide school walkout to protest the incoming United Conservative Party government’s stance on gay-straight alliances.

They say the protest is in response to a pledge by incoming premier Jason Kenney to proclaim the Education Act from 2014.

The move would remove the current ban on parental notification when students join gay-straight alliances, which are peer support groups for LGBTQ students.

Kenney has said he supports the groups, but says it should be up to teachers to decide whether it’s in the best interest of a student to inform their parents when they join one.
