Wildfire smoke reaches Grande Prairie

May 23, 2019 | 3:09 PM

Forest fire smoke has pushed south into Grande Prairie and the surrounding region.

A special air quality statement has been issued for the Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge, and Valleyview area by Envirornment Canada.

Environment Canada says air quality statements do remain in place for everything from Birch Hills and Saddle Hills Counties to the Northwest Territories border.

The smoke has pushed as far north as Watson Lake, Yukon, where an air quality statement has also been issued.

The High Level fire is still estimated at 92,000 hectares, but fire-watchers say the spread is moving away from the community. It is still considered out of control.

Officials say if conditions allow, crews will do controlled burns on highways leading south and west from the town in order to remove fuel for the blaze.

More resources are arriving daily as hundreds of firefighters and dozens of helicopters have been deployed.
