Allard named to three committees as new caucus takes shape

Grande Prairie’s new MLA is taking on a few more roles with the new sitting of the legislature.

Tracy Allard has been appointed to the Standing Committees of both the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund and Alberta’s Economic Future. She will also be taking the role of Vice Chair of the Rural Crime Sub Committee.

“I think it’s important, particularly that I’m not in cabinet, that I have some really active roles within the government caucus and on committees,” said Allard. “I was excited to be (named) on three, that made me very happy. I would say all three committees are near and dear to my heart and to the needs of my constituents.”

The roles cover a wide variety of areas. The Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund’s focus is to approve the annual report, as well as hold public meetings with Albertans on its investment activity and performance. The Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future’s focuses on areas that help bolster the provincial economy, such as Advanced Education, Multiculturalism and Status of Women, Economic Development and Trade and Tourism, among others.

These are all areas that will have Allard working closely with GP-Wapiti MLA and Minister of Finance Travis Toews, which she is very much looking forward to.

“Minister Toews is exceptional. He’s doing a fantastic job in his new role. I couldn’t be happier to work alongside him,” said Allard. “I’m thrilled for our region to have such excellent representation.”

Her leadership role with the Rural Crime Sub Committee is one that she is particularly proud of, as it is an area of concern to many in the Peace Country. She feels many positive strides have been taken in improving safety in rural communities, with thanks to the RCMP and other enforcement agencies, but does feel that there is still a long way to go.

“I think rural crime, and particularly repeat offenders, are a serious problem,” said Allard. “I also think that the backlog for our prosecutors is massive and we need to get to work to address that.”

Her first meeting will be with the Heritage Savings Trust Fund on June 21. No other meetings have been scheduled as of yet.
