Notley says lower than expected debt shows NDP was on the right track

EDMONTON – Alberta’s New Democrats say they were on the path to balancing the province’s books before they lost the April election to the United Conservatives.

The UCP released figures today showing the province ended the last fiscal year with a deficit more than two billion-dollars smaller than originally predicted in the budget.

Former Premier Rachel Notley took to Twitter to say the numbers show the NDP was on the right path.

NDP deputy leader Sara Hoffman says the party’s balance plan was working faster than expected.

She says the numbers put a dent in the Jason Kenney government’s claims that the books were off when the UCP took over.

In a news release, Finance Minister and GP-Wapiti MLA Travis Toews focused on the province’s 80-billion-dollar debt.

He said the level of debt is unsustainable and the government will take every measure possible to bring it under control.
