Crude-by-rail opposition group operating in Wembley

Some people in Wembley have organized an opposition movement against having a crude-by-rail facility in that community.

Town Council will consider a motion to approve adding such facilities as a permitted use under it’s Land Use By-Law at a public hearing set for July 22.

Source Energy Services and Tidewater Midstream want to add a crude-by-rail handling operation at Source’s existing rail yard.

Sarah Roberts speaks for a group of townspeople opposed to this happening.

“The town people said no, but our town council said yes with conditions. The town citizens appealed it, then Source appealed it and they don’t like the conditions we put on, so now they’re just trying to change our by-law so we have to let them is basically what’s happening right now.”

She adds they want to tell town council that the community does not want this.

“They’re making the decision too fast and they’re not getting all the information or taking the town into consideration. We had an open house for their last permit and we had over 100 people concerned and then they passed the by-law unanimously three days later anyway. We don’t feel our opinion as a town is being heard. Even when it is heard, and they say they listen, they just make the decision they want anyway.”

Robertson adds the town has a by-law choice to consider that she believes would “completely change the shape of our town” if approved.

That public hearing July 22 is to start around 8 p.m. in the gym at Helen E. Taylor school. Robertson says the venue was changed from the town office because of the large number of people expected to attend.
