A Peace Country community hall is hoping local residents support will aid in repairs.

The Berwyn Elks Hall is need of roof repairs due to weathering and old age, and they have been working to raise money through fundraising events and boosting awareness overall.

Hall president Kim Steeves says the roof repairs have been needed for a while.

“Our roof is long overdue. We just had a complete changeover on our board, and a new board has stepped in. With the new board, we’re looking at about $40,000 to have the roof repaired. We’re actually looking to replace the shingles, the vents, the eaves, everything will be replaced and we’re looking at about a $40,000 bill.”

The hall previously served as the Berwyn Hospital, which saw a large number of surrounding residents born there before the switch to a community hall in 1998.

Local resident George Bolkowy is doing his part to help. Having been born there when it was still a hospital, he has pledged $100 himself and is challenging all others who were born there to do the same.

Kim Steeves says so far the feedback has been great.

“George is very well known in the community, so with that he’s been our advocate for the Elks Hall. He’s definitely stepped forward and made his own challenge, he’s been phenomenal for us and it has blown up because George is so well-known throughout the community. It’s gotten great reviews and we’re getting some really good feedback from that as well.”

The Berwyn Elks Recreation Development Society (or B.E.R.D.S) has already planned a benefit dance on August 24 to raise money for the repairs. The dance will include a drink bar, a 50/50 cash draw, a silent auction, a live DJ, a raffle and door prizes.

The Elks Hall is accepting donations by cash at the village of Berwyn office or through e-transfer at berwynerds@gmail.com. Advanced tickets to the benefit dance are available from the Village Office in Berwyn for $15 or $20 at the door.
