Court update: jail time in July incident, trial date set after December theft

Jul 29, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says a July incident where homeowners cornered a suspect until police arrived has led to a six-month jail term for the man charged.

Arlen Jake Camille Ferguson of Horse Lake admitted to six charges, including possession of stolen property over $5000, attempted theft over $5000, and four counts of failure to comply July 22 in Grande Prairie court.

On July 10 at around 7 a.m. Beaverlodge RCMP received a call about an erratic driver on Highway 43. The vehicle hit the ditch and the driver ran away, tried to steal a quad but was chased off by the owner, then tried to get a ride from someone else but was blocked by residents. RCMP then took him in.

The vehicle had been stolen in Grande Prairie. A knife was found inside.

This sentence will run consecutively with another six month jail term Ferguson was given for possession of stolen property and possession of break-in instruments charges he was facing in a case from 2018.

Trial set in theft case

Alberta Justice says an October trial date has been set for a man charged after a young man was confronted by someone with a weapon and a vehicle was stolen.

Awale Yusuf Abdi will stand trial October 16.

He was arrested and charged with counts that included robbery, assault with a weapon, and theft of a motor vehicle on December 19 last year after an incident three days earlier.

RCMP said at the time that at around 9 a.m. on December 16, a young man was getting something out of a vehicle when someone walked up, pulled out a weapon, and demanded the car keys before driving off.

No one was injured.
