CKC mural project stopped by vandalism

Aug 7, 2019 | 5:30 AM

A project to add a mural to the west side of the new grand stand at the Community Knowledge Campus field has been suspended after graffiti was scrawled across the mural.

Patty Pura with Enforcement Services says the mural was covered with one large tag and attempts have been made to remove it.

“The city facilities maintenance group is looking at ways to completely remove the graffiti and the damaged mural. They found out there’s no way to remove the graffiti without damaging the mural.”

She adds her department will work with anyone who has had graffiti left on their property.

“We take complaints on them and we work with the property owners to get them cleaned up (and) to explain what the benefits are to making sure that the tag is removed in a timely fashion.”

Pura says removing graffiti quickly sends a message that it is not welcome.

“These guys tend to look for ways to get their name out. That’s their end game is to become famous, so to speak. The more they get their name out, the more of a street cred. that they get.”

Creating graffiti where it is not wanted is considered mischief under the Criminal Code of Canada and offenders could face criminal charges.
