Tornado Season

22 confirmed tornadoes across Alberta this year; three near GP

Aug 9, 2019 | 12:12 PM

In what has been the busiest tornado season in the past 20 years across the Wildrose province, a report from Environment Canada says that 22 tornadoes have touched down in 2019.

Two of those were rated as an EF2 and two were rated as EF1. The rest were rated as an EF0 on the Fujita scale, which is the lowest rating.

Our neck of the woods has seen three of those tornados. The first one came near Sexsmith on June 25. That was followed four days later by another one about 20 km south of Grovedale, and finally one 60 km northeast of Grande Cache on July 8. All three of these were rated as EF0.

Eleven, or exactly half, of those tornadoes across province came during the last week of June (23-29). Seven of the touchdowns were recorded during an outbreak on June 28.

Environment Canada says the 22 cases reported are either probable or confirmed, and that several cases continue to be investigated at this time, meaning more tornadoes may be confirmed at a later date.

The average number of tornadoes in Alberta per year entering 2019, according to Environment Canada, was 15.
