Grande Prairie Curling Centre looks to the city for help with rising utility costs

Aug 21, 2019 | 6:04 AM

Representatives for the Grande Prairie Curling Centre went before the Community Living Committee yesterday to seek the city’s help with rising utility costs.

They are hoping the city will revisit their lease agreement to hopefully make changes to match the rising costs of utilities.

“We’re simply looking at revisiting the agreement we had with the city entered two years ago. The city has been very gracious in helping with subsidizing some of the utility costs,” explained Serge Martin, Chair for the Grande Prairie Curling Centre.

The facility is closed for five to six months during the year, and the Association is still required to pay for all of the expenses and utilities despite the lack of incoming revenue.

“The utility costs for everyone in the province have increased beyond I think what anyone expected when the agreement was reached, so we’re looking at reopening those discussions to see if there’s some mutually agreeable terms we could come to.”

The Curling Centre is also looking to make use of the centre’s large dry space for other clubs in the city.

Martin he hopes the Curling Centre and the city can come to an agreement.

“The perfect outcome would be for the city and the Curling Centre to come to an agreement where both parties can see some value in revisiting the agreement, and as was discussed with committee, we think we have a year-round facility that’s only being really utilized to its fullest part during the curling season, and from April to September we hope that maybe the city has some other parties that can hop in to help offset that cost.”
