Bear Creek Folk Festival sees a successful weekend run

The Bear Creek Folk Festival wrapped up with their finale on Sunday here in Grande Prairie.

Sarah Card, producer of the Bear Creek Folk Fest, says the event draws in people from all over.

“We have five or six thousand people a day on site, kind of roughly half of them are from out of town, and about a third of them are from far out of town, I mean we see attendance from 140 different towns and cities around western Canada and even a third of our volunteers commuted from as far away as Vancouver and Arizona, we even had someone fly in from Germany.”

This summer’s weather was chillier than most years, but Card says that did not deter anyone from attending.

“Grande Prairie, they’re a hardy bunch. They brought their rain gear, they brought their tarps and they settled in for a fantastic weekend of music. I think also, really, I mean the weather has been so crummy all summer, but I think people just figured, well, it’s still raining, might as well have fun and end the summer on a high note and a bang.”

This year was the fourth annual festival, and featured over 30 provincial, national, and international touring artists performing from a wide range of genres.

Card says she sees the money coming in increasing over the years.

“The numbers are still coming in but typically we see a million dollar impact on the community so we bring roughly a million dollars a year into the Grande Prairie region. I see that as going up over time but right now that is probably about where we’re sitting at.”

She says they had a full hill of attendees and that the finale show featuring Blue Rodeo was a big highlight.
