Terry Fox Run to be held on Sunday in Muskoseepi Park

Sep 14, 2019 | 7:00 AM

The 39th annual Terry Fox Run in Muskoseepi Park will happen this Sunday.

Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion and the run will begin at 11:00 a.m. and go around the reservoir.

There will be a barbecue and visiting time afterwards as well.

Heather Jones, member of the Swan City Rotary Club, says there is no cost to participate, but donations are always accepted.

“There is no actual cost to register for the run, it’s just a donation if you feel you can. Obviously, that’s the goal, to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation but we also want to raise awareness and anybody and everybody can come and walk and run and do whatever they need to.”

She says that last year, they raised about $12,500, and that Grande Prairie is very supportive of events like this.

“I do know for people that aren’t from Grande Prairie, their jaws just drop at the amount of support and fundraising this community can do for anything: cancer research, MS research, if anyone’s house catches fire or any kind of disaster and research. This community reaches out and just gives, gives everything we have.”

Jones also says attendees are welcome to run or walk.

Recently, 12-year-old Grande Prairie native Brysen Howe did his Dash to the Cache fundraiser for cancer research but was unable to complete the total 184 km due to construction. He will be at the Terry Fox Run on Sunday to finish off his remaining 27 km.

During the month of September, several schools in the Grande Prairie area will be hosting their own Terry Fox runs as well.

The Terry Fox foundation is an international organization that focuses on the principles of Terry Fox and raising money for cancer research through annual Terry Fox runs.

Over $750 million has been raised worldwide through the Terry Fox Foundation.

The foundation says over 700 Terry Fox Runs are held from coast to coast to coast every year in Canada.

Registration and donating can also be done online.
