Supervised Consumption Committee ready for GP residents’ feedback

Sep 16, 2019 | 5:45 PM

People can have their say tomorrow evening (Sept. 17) regarding supervised consumption sites, as the committee, appointed by the province to review them, rolls into Grande Prairie for a town hall.

G.P. is the second last stop on the seven-location tour.

Rod Knecht, Chair of the Supervised Consumption Services committee says there is a lot of emotion surrounding the topic.

“We are hearing from the addicted, we are hearing from family members who have lost a loved one, we have had personal disclosures by people, and we have also heard from businesses that have been impacted. We have heard from people who have worked in the sites and that run the sites,” said Knecht. “So, we are really getting a real cross-section of feedback from folks.”

He says Grande Prairie is a little bit different from the others because it’s the first and only mobile site in the province.

“We hope to get a full view of the issue from a Grande Prairie resident’s perspective,” he said.

Tomorrow’s town hall will follow an open mic style where participants will get the opportunity to speak for three minutes and that’s so the committee can hear from as many people as possible.

There will be computers available on site for those who do not wish to speak and are more comfortable voicing their opinions and concerns through an online survey. The survey can also be completed here.

Knecht says they will take the information they gather at the town halls and through the survey and studies and they will do up a report in November and are hoping to present it to the government in December.

The town hall is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre (11633 100 Street).
