Official opening held for Highway 43X

Sep 23, 2019 | 3:24 PM

A special ceremony was held today to mark the official opening of the Highway 43X Bypass.

The four-lane divided highway, which connects the two portions of Highway 43 at Richmond Hill, also includes a traffic circle at Range Road 63.

Transportation minister Ric McIver says safety was a key focus of this project.

“Divided highways and traffic circles, both are things that prevent head-on collisions. That’s keeping people safe. Getting them home at the end of the day to their families is a top priority.”

Among those in attendance at today’s ceremony was former Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Wayne Drysdale.

The former transportation and infrastructure minister is happy to see the project finally completed.

“We were pushing for this and started the approval process, but it got finished after us of course. (It) didn’t quite come out the same as what we had planned for the overpass at the other end, but it’s a start anyway.”

McIver also met with officials from both the City and County, where safety on Highway 40 was a much-discussed topic.

“I also heard a consistent message in terms of bringing people together both from the County, from the City and members of the business community and the safety community (that) there’s improvements that still need to be done to Highway 40 south of Grande Prairie. We will consider those carefully as we go forward.”

Highway 43X, which includes a traffic circle and twinned highway from Range Road 63 to Richmond Hill, cost $48 million dollars to complete.
