Grizzly bear found wounded and partially paralyzed near Whitecourt

Oct 23, 2019 | 12:23 PM

Whitecourt Fish and Wildlife officers are asking the public for information after a mature wounded grizzly bear was found on the eastern banks of the McLeod River on October 20.

The bear had been shot in the spine and partially paralyzed.

It was found approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Whitecourt and the Hard Luck Canyon area.

Officers say the bear was only able to drag itself by its front paws, and say they were left with the difficult choice to euthanize the bear to end its suffering.

Evidence was then collected, and officers asked anyone who may have been in the area between October 17 to the 20 for information.

Grizzly bears are considered a threatened species in Alberta and hunting them is illegal, with the maximum penalty being a fine of $100,000 and/or two years in prison.

Those with information are asked to contact the Report-A-Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800, or to file a report online here.
