UPDATE: Telus and Koodo 911 issue resolved

Mar 25, 2020 | 11:33 AM

UPDATE: The City of Grande Prairie says the connection issue for Telus and Koodo mobile customers to call 911 has been resolved. Calls are operating normally now.

Telus and Koodo are experiencing a cellphone outage that is affecting the ability of Alberta customers to call 911.

Grande Prairie is among the communities across the province that have put out information alerts saying Telus and Koodo Mobility customers aren’t able to call for emergency help. The other communities affected include Red Deer, Airdrie, Clearwater County and Rockyford.

The City is asking people to use a landline or go to the nearest emergency services station, fire station or RCMP detachment if they need help.

The alerts say the outage is affecting Telus and Koodo Mobility customers across the province, and incorrectly rerouting them to Saskatchewan 911. A release from the City of Grande Prairie says the call will still be answered, and Saskatchewan 911 will transfer the caller to the appropriate resources as quickly as possible.

Telus says on its website that it has been experiencing network congestion across the country.

The City says work is underway to resolve the issue as soon as possible, though there is no estimated time from the mobile carriers for when the repairs will be completed.

No other calling functions have been affected.
