Two new funds started by Community Foundation to provide help during pandemic

Two new funds to help during the pandemic have been started by the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta.

One is called the Better Together Fund.

Foundation CEO Tracey Vavrek says this will help community organizations that have had to close and are only able to deal with clients online or by phone.

“We also know that many of them have cancelled fund-raising events and also support areas have been cancelled in the community. We also know that organizations are facing deficits within their budgets and we recognize all of those areas are a result of COVID-19.”

Vavrek says this fund will help these organizations manage now and deal with future needs.

The second is called the Community Kitchen and Food Bank Fund. Vavrek says there has been an increase in demand for food at the Salvation Army and the Friendship Centre’s Hot Meal Program.

Vavrek says this fund is set up to make sure both have enough food to give out.

“This fund is designated to respond to both of those organizations to ensure that everyone has what they need to have a full belly and have access to nutritious and adequate food amounts. We know that many have lost their jobs right now. We know there are people at risk, there are vulnerable populations, and we want to be there to support.”

Vavrek says $25,000 has already been donated to the Community Kitchen and Food Bank Fund, money that was expected to go out this week.

She adds donations can be made through the Foundation’s web site.

“On the very front page of our web site, they’ll see all the information about the funds right on the very front page. It leads them right to the donate button. It’s a safe donate button. Through our online platform, they will receive their receipt as soon as their donation is processed.”

Donations can also be made through the Community Foundation’s Facebook page.
