The Park Hotel in downtown Grande Prairie has officially come down.

The demolition on the decade-long vacant building along 100 Avenue began Wednesday morning, marking the end of the hotel’s near 63-year stay in the Swan City. Crews worked into the early hours of Thursday morning to complete the tear down

As for what’s next for the property, plans are in the works to build a new six-storey mixed-use building. Back in December, the City of Grande Prairie entered into a 10-year lease with the site re-developer to build a new structure which would include approximately 64 residential units, plus commercial space.

Director of Infrastructure and Economic Development with the City Brian Glavin said back in December that construction would to begin within 12 months of signing the lease, and would be completed within 24 months.

He also said the building is to cost a minimum of $25 million, but that the City is agreeing to a lease within the building, and that the building will be privately owned.
