COVID-19 UPDATE

Resident of High Prairie continuing care home dies from COVID-19

May 11, 2020 | 4:24 PM

A resident of the J.B. Wood continuing care facility in High Prairie has died from COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, becoming the third fatality at that facility during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, announced the death as one of two new fatalities reported for May 11, with the other coming from the Calgary Zone. The death toll in Alberta remains at 117 though, as Dr. Hinshaw stated that two deaths previously deemed to be because of COVID-19 were actually determined to be the result of another cause.

That includes one at J.B. Wood, where two deaths had been reported prior to Monday. With Monday’s correction, two residents have died from COVID-19 and one has been deemed to have died from another cause.

Meantime, the province added 47 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, to bring the total to 6,300 cases as of May 11. Of those cases, 1,524 are active, 4,659 are recovered and 117 people have died.

Totals within Peace Region municipalities as of Monday are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: Three cases (All recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Five cases (One active, four recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Two cases (One active, one recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 67 cases (Five active, 52 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 37 cases (Five active, 30 recovered, three deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: Seven cases (All recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: One case (Fatal)
  • County of Northern Lights: One case (Recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 31 cases (Ten active, 21 recovered)

The number of hospitalizations in Alberta also went up by two from Sunday, as 73 people are in hospital at this time. Twelve of those patients are currently admitted into ICU.

Of those hospital patients, there are five at northern Alberta hospitals. Alberta Health Services tells EverythingGP that as of Monday, there are three people in hospital at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre in McLennan, one at the High Prairie Healthcare Centre and one at the hospital in St. Paul.

Over the last 24 hours, 2,864 tests have been processed. 175,502 people have received a test in Alberta since March.
