Dog parks re-opened in Grande Prairie, playground re-opening plan in the works

May 20, 2020 | 7:49 PM

The City of Grande Prairie says dog parks across the city are now open to the public, while saying plans to re-open playground facilities are in the works.

City officials provided an update late Wednesday afternoon on its outdoor recreation facilities, detailing that the public may once again access dog parks. Users at those parks must maintain a two-metres physical distance at all times.

Meanwhile, the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership (GPREP) is working out the details about access to playground equipment within the City and County of Grande Prairie, Wembley, Sexsmith, Beaverlodge and Hythe. Equipment in the six partner municipalities of GPREP have been taped off since March 20 to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“A regional co-ordination of playground re-openings is in its final stages to ensure all provincial health and safety regulations are being met,” reads the statement from the City.

“GPREP will be announcing a playground re-opening plan in the near future.”

Playgrounds are allowed to re-open under provincial guidelines, but decisions on whether to open them up are left to each municipality in Alberta.

The province has also provided a guide sheet for users to reference before heading to the playground, if and when they open.

Gatherings in outdoor spaces may now have up to 50 people, which was raised from 15 back on Friday ahead of the long weekend. Attendees of all gatherings need to maintain a two-metres physical distance.

“Activities should not include the sharing of common equipment unless you are from the same household,” says the City. “League play is not permitted.”

The City also announced that all indoor recreation programming has been cancelled through June 30. Credits will be given to accounts that have already paid and refunds will be processed in the coming weeks.

The City also says the 2020 Eastlink Triathlon has been cancelled.
