Wet weather interrupting MD of Greenview fieldwork

May 26, 2020 | 5:55 PM

Seeding progress in the MD of Greenview has been “very slow,” according to Reeve Dale Smith.

Smith estimates less than 30 per cent has been seeded, with some individual producers at zero and some at 30-50 per cent finished.

“(There is) a large difference across our MD, from the north end to the south end, but still way behind normal. We do have farmers that have not even started seeding because it’s just way too wet or they’re still trying to finish combining last year’s crop.”

He adds under normal conditions, 50 to 70 per cent of the crop would be planted at this point.

“That’s a fairly significant delay out there because we’re nearing the first of June and its a timeline when most grain farmers for sure want to have their crops in the ground.”

Smith estimates about 10 per cent of last year’s crop still needs to be either combined or worked under.

“It’s just too wet for those areas that need to be done because they were wet last fall and with this rain over the weekend, they’re back to a standstill again.”

Smith says crop quality is “all over the board” depending on what wildlife damage has been done on top of the effects of the winter. He describes yields as “reasonable.”
