Salvation Army of Grande Prairie deploys food truck following closure of Community Kitchen

May 27, 2020 | 3:02 PM

The Salvation Army of Grande Prairie is helping out the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre after the Community Kitchen was temporarily closed due to a team member testing positive for COVID-19 late last week.

The Community Kitchen is a program run by the Friendship Centre and the Salvation Army. They provide three meals a day, five days a week to those who need it.

With the closure of the Community Kitchen, many regulars were left looking for meals that they’d usually receive.

Last week the Salvation Army of Grande Prairie was returning from Fort Vermillion, where they had just used their brand new food truck to help provide meals for residents of that community that were forced to flee their homes because of rising flood waters.

The food truck was in Fort Vermillion for three weeks.

The new food truck came into the hands of the Salvation Army of Grande Prairie in late April, and offers help to communities across the Peace Region.

Captain Peter Kim with the Salvation Army of Grande Prairie says they are more than willing and ready to help with their new food truck.

“It’s for helping families and individuals who are hungry and need food. The Community Kitchen had a case of COVID from one of their staff so we were able to fill in that gap until the Community Kitchen is up and running again.”

Kim says that there will be three volunteers working in the food truck helping make and distribute meals to those that are hungry.

The food truck will be parked at the Salvation Army downtown location (9615 102 Street) Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Visitors will be able to grab a lunch and supper during these hours.

“We’re ready and prepared to make 40-100 meals. We can do more if we see the demand, but for now that’s what we’re planning for,” said Kim.

Kim added that once the Community Kitchen re-opens they’ll close the food truck until it’s needed again. Kim noted that the Salvation Army is currently in discussions with the Rotary House of Grande Prairie to help feed people on the weekends.

Only those in need of a meal are asked to go to the food truck.
