Town of Beaverlodge receives $2.2 million to upgrade water treatment plant

Jul 20, 2020 | 4:43 PM

The Town of Beaverlodge has been awarded a $2.2 million grant from the Province of Alberta to help upgrade its water treatment plant.

The provincial grant comes as part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, and the town was awarded funding as part of a Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP) project, which is intended to create jobs while improving municipal infrastructure.

Beaverlodge Mayor Gary Rycroft says this funding was much needed for the town.

“This funding is for the second phase of our water treatment plant upgrades, which are badly needed as our water treatment plant is over 30 years old. This second phase of upgrades will benefit our community by ensuring our water supply is safe and secure for the next 40 years.”

Rycroft adds that Alberta has some of the highest standards of drinking water in the world, and this money will ensure that the town can keep up with those standards.

He also says that MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti Travis Toews played a big part in getting the provincial funding to the town.

“(I) thank Minister Toews for stepping up for us, we appreciate all the help we can get.”

The province estimates the work will create an estimated 13 jobs in the community.

It was announced earlier this month that a similar grant was awarded to the County of Grande Prairie to expand the La Glace water treatment facility.
