City Hall says more money coming in than expected

Aug 6, 2020 | 5:30 AM

City Hall has collected more tax revenue than it expected to have at this point.

The deadline to pay city property taxes had already been extended from the end of June to the end of August because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of Corporate Services Shane Bourke says the city has collected about half what would come in normally, adding that the City has not had to access a $35-million line of credit with the bank, which was previously approved by council.

“The line of credit was really just protection to manage our cash flow. It will save us interest costs. We’re very appreciative that the residents of Grande Prairie who are able to pay their taxes have been doing that. It ensures the continuation of services that are important to all residents continues uninterrupted.”

Bourke advises anyone residents having trouble paying to contact City Hall.

“If they’re not able to pay by the August 31 deadline, they’re able to contact the city and arrange a monthly tax installment plan to spread that out over the remainder of the year, to the end of December. We do have some flexible payment options for those who aren’t able to pay before the end of August.”

The city’s Contact Centre can be reached at 780-538-0300 or at citizencontactcentre@cityofgp.com
