BOW ISLAND, AB – A local government in Southern Alberta and one of its former employees have been handed their penalties regarding issues with water quality monitoring and reporting.

A new operator was hired in September 2017 to work under the existing operator, Ryan Jeffery Sanderson, in their public works department.

The new employee reported to Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) that the town had discovered 20 daily chlorine samples had not been taken as required.

AEP noted that the town did not file its 2016 Annual Report, and upon being directed to do so, learned that the lead sample results from their 2015 and 2016 annual reports had been copied from their 2014 document.

Between 2014 to September 2017, 132 chlorine residual samples had been missed.

The Town of Bow Island has pleaded guilty to failing to immediately report structural or equipment malfunctions in the waterworks system under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. They have been issued a fine of $10,000 and will be under a 2.5-year probation order that will closely monitor the town’s compliance with monitoring and reporting requirements.

Sanderson has pleaded guilty to one count of providing false or misleading information under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. He was given a six-month conditional sentence order to be served in the community, followed by two years of probation.
