Grande Prairie RCMP sending out extra patrols for boaters and quaders for remainder of summer

The Grande Prairie RCMP says they’re sending out their quad squad and jet boat teams to conduct extra patrols throughout the remainder of the summer.

Quaders and boaters can expect to have their vehicles stopped and checked more often by RCMP. County of Grande Prairie Peace Officers will also be assisting in the checks.

Patrols are expected to occur in highly travelled areas of the County, including south of Grande Prairie, the train bridge, Evergreen, Smokey River, Wapiti River and other areas.

The focus of the increased patrol is to promote the safety for people while operating off highway vehicles and boats.

RCMP are reminding those with off-highway vehicles are reminded to follow the following safety tips:

• Possess all relevant documentation when engaging in off highway vehicle activities.
• Keep your head in the game and out of the terrain. Wearing a helmet makes you less likely to get a fatal injury in a collision and more likely to get a thumbs up from us.
• Safe speed is the right speed. Use caution, be alert and slow down when operating on unfamiliar terrain. This makes it easy to be ready for hidden or unforeseen obstacles.
• Ride in groups and let people know the route you will be taking and when you will be coming back.
• Mixing drugs and alcohol with OHV activities will impair your judgement. Side effects include a shorter attention span, slower reaction times and an altered perception of time and distance.

Boaters are reminded to:

• Plan your voyage. Follow a pre-departure checklist to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Weather changes quickly and can be extremely dangerous while on the water. Be sure to check local weather conditions before you set sail.
• Never operate a boat while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
• Always make sure everyone on board, even experienced swimmers, are wearing life jackets.
• Always bring emergency supplies like extra food, clothes and a cell phone.
• Be alert of large vessels and watercraft that can be restricted in their ability to stop, turn or flee.
